The cabinets and furniture are a balance of function and aesthetics.
Furniture pieces
are are created in close partnership with individual clients. Charles has
produced furniture for a wide variety of clients. Most clients are from the Northern
California area where his shop is located and many clients hear of Mitchell Mountain
Woodworks from word-of-mouth.
Charles strives for excellence in technical execution while being sensitive to design. The goal is to unite the finest materials and woods to create works of art for families to pass down from generation to generation.
Almost all pieces use at least two different woods. While one wood is used to frame members, another often highly-figured wood is used for drawer fronts, panels and tops. Thick veneers are bookmatched from these highly figured woods. Charles uses traditional joinery; mortise and tenon through dovetails. Drawers have hardwood sides and are dovetailed at all four corners.
All furniture is a marriage of form, function, art and craft. Charles is heavily influenced by the works of Frank Lloyd Wright, the Greene and Greene brothers and furniture from the Shaker period. To create this blend of art and function Charles carefully hand-selects domestic and imported woods. Wood choices are always based around how best to create the piece – to be integrous to the wood while satisfying the clients’ needs.
Mitchell Mountain Woodworks has expertise in designing and building custom kitchens, bathrooms, offices, wine cellars, libraries, fireplace mantles, window seats and benches. But the heart and soul of the work can be found in the custom furniture Charles has created for clients over the years – beds, dressers, bookcases, lamps, tables, and entertainment centers.
